Ascend Co-founders Reg Gabriel and Christine Nicodemus, and Ascend Director of School and Student Success Missi Rossi, visited Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology on November 7 and 8, 2019. It was the team’s second visit to the AVID classrooms in the high school this fall.
The Ascend team has been working with students on setting short and long term goals to help them better plan for their futures. In addition to setting goals, students took the RIASEC assessment, which maps student interests to careers, and learned about potential careers they may be interested in based upon their results.
Students were engaged in learning more about themselves, searching for potential careers, and learning about the educational requirements and salary potential for the careers they are interested in. “We had students who learned about potential paths they had never considered or were even aware of,” said Nicodemus.
“Our main priority for these visits is to help students understand that they are in charge of their own lives, and to empower them to take steps that can lead to future growth and development, starting now,” said Gabriel.
Students also shared their progress on goals that had been set through Ascend earlier in the semester. One student reported that she had improved her psychology grade by making a study plan and devoting time after school for tutoring. Another student was well on his way to completing his goal of 50 volunteer hours for the semester.
“It’s exciting to see that students are setting goals outside of their academic work,” said Rossi, “we want our platform to support them in working toward the things they are passionate about, and learning about all of the potential goals they are or could be setting helps us build a better product that can help more students succeed.”
